Learn more about NC State’s new campus-wide effort to streamline and improve business services at two open forums on May 20 and 21. Information and registration is available online .

In the coming months, the university will begin creating new Business Operations Centers, or BOCs, to reduce paperwork and eliminate bottlenecks for people who rely on business processes, such as travel authorizations, purchasing, time reporting, employee recruitment and hiring.

At the forums, leaders of University Business Operations will discuss the new organizational structure for delivering business services, and explain how the BOCs will be staffed. They’ll also give a progress report on efforts to reengineer many business processes – a complex initiative involving teams of finance and human resource professionals who have been working tirelessly to identify and eliminate unnecessary “pain points” that add cost but not value.

The new and improved processes will be rolled out in the BOCs and then closely monitored to ensure that they work as designed. Processes will be evaluated and refined constantly as part of the division’s commitment to continuous improvement.

The reorganization of business services was launched in January 2011 as part of the university’s strategic planning effort. Over the coming year, many finance and human resource transactions will be lifted out of individual units and colleges—along with many of the people who perform them—and moved into the BOCs. Current NC State employees who move to the BOCs will receive new training, resources and opportunities as part of the initiative.

The new centers will focus on delivering nearly flawless service. Over time, the BOCs are expected to save the university money by achieving economies of scale, improving processing times and reducing errors.

The first BOC is an Onboarding Center, set to open this month in the Joyner Visitor Center, that will coordinate all the activities involved in processing new hires. The others are scheduled to open as follows:

Nine faculty members from the University of Adelaide presented a food security and health workshop at NC State last month in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs, the Global Health Initiative and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The workshop gave faculty from both universities new opportunities to develop partnerships that build on joint strengths in research and teaching.

The delegation from the University of Adelaide poses for a picture in front of Hunt Library with NC State faculty, industry leaders and workshop organizers.

NC State and the University of Adelaide have a strategic partnership to advance research collaboration and academic exchanges across areas of complementary strength and expertise.

The workshop included presentations, discussions and strategic planning in plant breeding, plant science, food bioprocessing and nutrition, soil science and animal sciences. Biotechnology partners in the Research Triangle Park attended the workshop. Facilitated collaborative brainstorming sessions, called innovation “sandpit” sessions, resulted in at least five letters of intent for multiple grant applications.

NC State and University of Adelaide students can participate in semester or yearlong exchange programs between the two institutions beginning next spring.

In a ceremony last month, the Graduate School recognized the graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who have successfully completed the Preparing Future Leaders programs.

PFL programs are designed to establish a foundation for lifelong professional development for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Since 2007, PFL has delivered 617 events to more than 14,000 participants. The PFL Celebration of Graduate Student Success honored participants who completed the Certificate of Accomplishment in Teaching program, the Mentoring and Teaching Practicum, the Preparing the Professoriate program, the Graduate Leadership Development Series, the Certificate in Career Development, as well as the inaugural group of PFL Ambassadors. More than 100 colleagues, friends, family, faculty, and staff members attended the ice cream social and poster session to celebrate NC State’s commitment to excellence in professional development.

Provost Warwick Arden congratulated the students and postdocs.

“You, our graduate students, are critical to the success of NC State,” he said. “We want to celebrate your dedication and commitment in supporting and advancing the mission of our university. You are our next generation of leaders in the academy, in industry and in our communities. Many of you are already shaping the future with your commitment to teaching, research, leadership and service.”

Menglong Hu, Ph.D. student in chemistry, served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony. He successfully completed the Graduate Leadership Development Series, and now serves as a PFL Ambassador.

“Through PFL, I learned about leadership, communication skills, career development and teaching,” he said. “I learned how to handle an interview, how to motivate my students in class, how to conduct my research, how to deal with the conflict and how to teach effectively. I always knew that those skills were very important for my future development, but I couldn’t find a way to learn them systematically. PFL provided me the channel, a channel I can’t find anywhere else.”

Arden joined Rebeca Rufty, Barbi Honeycutt, Melissa Bostrom and Beth Overman as they awarded 111 certificates to students who successfully completed the PFL programs. The recipients of each award are:
