Successful Year for Leadership Program

The Woodsons congratulate international studies major Mirna Dave for successfully completing the first-year leadership program.

The Chancellor’s First Year Student Leadership Program held its closing ceremony Nov. 13 at the chancellor’s residence, bringing its first year to a successful conclusion. The program provided weekly leadership development opportunities for 20 students.

The program, an initiative of the NC State Women’s Center, works to build a cadre of student leaders who are civic-minded, intellectually able, and professionally skilled, and who will become the community, business, and national leaders of the future.

Graduates of the first-year leadership program celebrate at the Point.

With an emphasis on both community and service, participants select an organization with which to volunteer throughout the year. This year, participants chose Interact, Feed the Pack, Read to L.E.A.D. and other agencies both on- and off-campus.

The program recruits strictly from NC State’s first-year student population (including transfer students), targeting both women and men from underrepresented groups with no prior leadership experience. The program especially encourages students majoring in STEM disciplines to apply. C. Ellen Washington, assistant director of the Women’s Center, leads the program.

CFYSLP is currently recruiting for its 2014 class. Refer potential candidates to the application online. The deadline is Monday, Nov. 25.
