Provost Responds to Anti-GLBT Graffiti

Provost Warwick Arden issued the following statement Wednesday:

Diversity and inclusion are core values of NC State, helping to weave the fabric of a campus community that includes more than 40,000 students, faculty and staff who come to NC State from all over North Carolina, the nation and the world.

A diverse population enriches and enlivens the educational experience for students in pursuit of a college education and for whom NC State is the gateway to opportunity. Everyone should be free to pursue their education, attain their personal goals and do their jobs in a safe and welcoming environment.

It is in that spirit that we strongly condemn the thoughtless and shameful act of vandalism and harassment taken against our GLBT Center and against our campus on Monday night.

Not only are we a diverse campus community, we encourage open and civil discussion on difficult issues–the kind of discussion that allows us to gain greater respect and a better understanding of each other. I am encouraged and proud to hear that once again students, staff, faculty and administrators are taking a stand in the face of a hateful act. Our unity is a reflection of our shared values and a dynamic statement on the importance of open, constructive and respectful dialogue.

I have always been proud my daughter is a student at an institution such as NC State, but now I am even more so in light of this situation and the university’s response to hatred and violence towards another.

  • I stand in unity with the Staff and students who call the GLBT Center their safe haven. It must remain safe for everyone. We need to continue to support and care for our students and staff. If anyone knows anything about this incident I hope they will speak up.

Our behavior towards one another should be truthful, never degrading, nor destructive, always uplifting. The roots of these activities find themselves in our desertion of morality. Until we realize and accept these truths, we have no hope of change. Righteousness does not hide behind petty crime. “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”

I hope the person who wrote the slurs at the GLBT Center comes to realize that the GLBT Center is a benefit to everyone including him. Since it opened it has helped countless students in both the GLBT and the straight communities through life’s hills and valleys. It is through our diversity that we gain strength and through knowledge that we gain understanding and tolerance. And through our strength, understanding, and tolerance that we come together as a better community. I am proud and uplifted to see how the university faculty, staff, students and parents have come to show their support. Our world would a better place if only each of us would “walk a mile” in our perceived adversary’s shoes before levying a comment or throwing stones!!!
